Fresh Android Apps for July 13: Slice update, NBC Olympics Live Extra, Amazing Alex

Rounding out the week, Slice â€" Shopping Organized received a big update which extends its capabilities greatly. If you’re a keen online shopper and have plenty of packages to track, Slice is a worthwhile companion app. Up next is NBC Olympics Live Extra â€" still a week or two early, but definitely for fans who want to watch live coverage of London 2012 wherever they are. Finally, Rovio revealed a new game which, amazingly enough, doesn’t contain any angry birds whatsoever. Enjoy the weekend!

We featured Slice a few months back^[1] and were impressed by some of its unique features. Yesterday, the app got a great version 2.0 update, so if you’ve never checked out the app before, now might be a good time. Essentially, Slice helps you track your shopping expenses and shipping, and most of it is automated because it taps directly into your email.

This new update offers better tracking of your personal financing, giving you greater insight into your shopping habits. You can track any package by entering its shipping number or scanning a barcode, and the app can now read more than just Google and Yahoo! email accounts, adding AOL, iCloud and Hotmail to the mix.

Alongside the standalone NBC Olympics^[2] app, the big U.S. broadcaster just unleashed this new app into Google Play. It could turn out to be a great tool for those who need London 2012 Olympics Games coverage in their hand at all times.

NBC is boasting an incredible 3,500 hours of Olympic coverage starting at the end of the month, and you’ll be able to watch every event live on your Android smartphone with this app. You can even choose your favorite sports, and receive push notifications for event start times. There are full replays, alternate camera views and DVR-like capabilities so you never miss a moment.

Rovio, creators of the hugely popular Angry Birds series, have finally released a new game featuring neither fowl nor pigs (as far as I can tell). Amazing Alex is actually a rebadging of an older title called Casey’s Contraptions which Rovio acquired the rights to a few months ago.

Amazing Alex offers numerous physics-based puzzles where the player must use various bits and bobs lying around to create amazing Rube Goldstein-like objects to complete each level. There are 100 levels spread across four worlds, so it should keep you scratching your head for a while. A $2.99 HD version^[3] of Amazing Alex is also available alongside a free version^[4].
