Nexus 7 Tablet manufacturing cost $184

It costs $184 in parts to build the Nexus 7 Tablet

The Nexus 7[1], this year’s hot Android Tablet from Google and Asus with a very attractive low price of $199. As we’ve informed you[2], Google’s Andy Rubin said that Google simply makes no profit with the sales of this tablet ! During four months, ASUS engineers worked real hard on finding a way to put all the high-end stuff in a tablet that would retail for only $200.

Now for the interesting fact. How much does it cost to build the Nexus 7? Well, component for manufacturing the 8GB variant cost about $184. That is without covering other costs, like research and development . The 16GB variant requires an extra  NAND chip memory chip that costs 8$. We are not sure why this variant’s price is $50 higher.  And there you have it, when they said no profit they really meant it. You can preorder the device[3] from the Play Store.

Here’s the list of the key components, in case you are interested:

Show your hand with these fun trading card games for Android

Show your hand with these fun trading card games for Android

Recently, it was revealed that Rage of Bahamut was one of the top grossing[1] games for Android. Trading card games have been around for quite some time but now are getting popular on Android and other mobile devices. In general, these are turn-based games where the outcome of each turn is based on the cards each player has. These can be fun games, but do a have a learning curve to them.

Fortunes of War is a fun and relatively quick game to learn. You begin your turn with a set of cards that represent power, wealth and ability. The key to winning is to develop a strategy to build up your deck's Victory Points, while trying to lower your opponents. The game has a very well done tutorial and card rules sections. The game comes with three main modes. You can play the conquest mode, where you are following a storyline; a quick match mode against the AI; and finally a multiplayer mode game online. There is also a paid version[2] of Fortunes of War that unlocks more conquest stages and multiplayer options.

In Rage of Bahamut you first chose a side: man, god or demon. Once you have done that, then you must go through the tutorial. In the tutorial, you will get one card and the basics on how to play and advance. Overall, the game does provide a lot of explanation about things. In general the game has two main modes: quests and battles. The quest area is where you build up experience and obtain more cards. As you collect cards, you can combine them to create customized and more powerful ones. In the battle mode, you can create custom decks that you will use when you battle other players online. The game encourages you to play with (and against) others online. There is a lot to the game and it will keep you entertained. In addition to earning items via quests and battles, you can purchase cards with in app purchases.

Download the Appolicious Android app[3]

Shadow Era is a beautifully designed and well structured cross-platform game. You can play on your Android device or on the web. The game begins by you choosing and naming a hero card. You can play various battles on the world map or choose to battle other players online. When it is your turn, there is a specific order of what to do. The game will provide some guidance but I found it took some time to understand how it all worked. Within the battle, it’s all about getting and using skills/abilities cards to support and strengthen your fighter cards. You can attack multiple times if you have the appropriate cards on the game board. Once the boss of that battle is killed the battle is over. When you win a battle you are awarded coins/crystals, which can be used to purchase more decks of cards. You will want to get more cards over time, since this is what determines how you perform in the battle. The website[4] contains a forum and support area plus the ability to purchase more crystals.

Cabals is another cross-platform trading card game. You can play on your Android device or online. Another nice feature of the game is you can play offline on your Android without having to log-in or create an account. Here you can try or practice the game without any commitments, but you will not get any experience points. Within the game, you can have an online match, friend match, or single player game. Cabal is also a bit difference in that in uses a game board in addition to the cards. To win you can either conquer your opponent’s stronghold (position on the game board) or collect 60 domination points. The game board and cards are nicely done and easy to read. As with the other games, you can earn more cards via playing or in-app purchase. The website[5] does have a forum and help section if needed.

Legend Cards is a new game to Android but has been very popular in Japan. As with the other games you begin by choosing a race: human, machine or monster. The game is very similar to Rage of Bahamut, where you complete quests to level-up and collect more cards. You can battle others online, combine cards to create customized and more powerful ones. You follow a series of quests on the map to collect items. If you play Rage of Bahamut, then you will have a general idea on how to play. I found the tutorial to be too brief and it really did not explain a lot. The developer’s site was also no help. The graphics are nice with the human characters being anime-style women. As with the others, you can purchase more cards and special items within the app.

Android App Video Review: Where's My Perry?

Android App Video Review: Where's My Perry?

Where's My Water?[1] was a delightful physics puzzler from Creature Feep and Disney. It was brimming with that Disney brand of personality and charm, and the gameplay was fairly original for a liquid relocation puzzle game. Now, that game gets a sequel and a brand new skin, themed after the hilarious show Phineas and Ferb. Where's My Perry?[2] brings with it new mechanics and art, and a whole new sense of humor, making it just as refreshing as the first.

Instead of helping a sewer dwelling alligator take a bath, you are helping Agent P, a platypus named Perry who is also a secret agent, get to a secret base. This base is officially over 6,000 kilometers underground according to this game. By guiding the water to Perry's location, you'll activate the pneumatically-opened transport tube. Some of the new mechanics include lasers that turn water into steam or ice and vice versa, and water to confetti  conversion devices. Instead of collecting rubber duckies on each level, you are collecting three garden gnomes.

The art is just as good as ever, but with more of a Phineas and Ferb flair. The animations and random voice clips that are played make the whole thing much more enjoyable, and the music matches the game perfectly. This sequel is much more than a cheap re-skin and cash in, and the new mechanics and humorous elements make for a brand new experience. Whether you were a massive fan of the first or missed out on it entirely, I definitely recommend you give this one a go. You can currently download Where's My Perry? for just one dollar.

Where's My Perry? is too easy to keep you coming back

Where's My Perry? is too easy to keep you coming back

Where's My Perry?[1] is weirdly named; at all times you know exactly where your Perry is (it’s actually so named because this is kind of a sequel to Where's My Water?[2]). Perry is hiding in a tube, waiting for you to use your six year-old powers of deduction to open a door for him. Yes, Where's My Perry? is aimed squarely at children and/or people who are really not good at puzzles. So, if you're constantly looking for that great new puzzle game to keep you occupied, you won't stay with this one for long.

Where's My Perry? looks like it has a lot going on in it, but it really doesn't. All you have to do is move water into a hole on the floor, or move steam into a hole on the ceiling, or whatever. You move the H2O by cutting through dirt with your finger. So the extent of the game is you directing water toward where it needs to go. If there were a version of this game that required you to use your phone's tilt sensor, you might have a physics-based puzzler that is complex and interesting. Unfortunately, the puzzles tend to be very simple and not challenging. At most, an experienced puzzle player will have to try a given puzzle twice before moving on, and even doing a puzzle two times will only take you 20 or 30 seconds.

If you're bad at puzzles, or if you're looking for something totally mindless to do as you're sitting on the couch half-watching TV at the end of a long day, then this game might be for you. But for most consumers of phone games, Where's My Perry? will not satisfy that puzzle itch. Those folks will probably do 10 or 20 puzzles and then play something else as it's just not challenging enough.

Word Lens tops Android Apps of the Week

Word Lens tops Android Apps of the Week

Word Lens tops our best apps of the week, translating foreign signs into your native language as you travel. London 2012 Results App also made a splash this week, delivering updates from the Olympics so you can follow the many sports featured in the summer games. On the social side, Twitter’s update brought much overdue features to the Android app, while sports enthusiasts can stay on top of Big Ten games with BTN2Go.

See the world in your language. That’s the mantra that represents what the Word Lens app is all about as it instantly translates printed words from one language to another. Using your smartphone camera, just point your Android at the printed material you need translated and the worlds will automatically appear in real time. You can also look up translations by typing in a word, or clicking on a word. The app was designed for travelers that need to translate street signs, menus and other text. Supported languages include English converted to Spanish, French and Italian. The full app comes with just one language pack, though additional languages can be purchased in-app. A lite version[1] is available to try before you buy.

The newly updated Twitter for Android app works more like the desktop version. That means expanded tweets to show the media being linked to, improved search and better push notifications. Event support has also been added to incorporate a bit of ambient context to your Twitter experience. One of the notable updates is the beefed-up push notifications you can tie to specific accounts, such as your local news feed or any other source you want to monitor closely. But the most popular update is likely the expanded tweets, which lets you watch videos, read article summaries and essentially enjoy rich media directly in the tweet instead of having to click through to see if a shared link is worth your time.

Download the Appolicious Android app[2]

Stay on top of the Summer Olympics with the official London 2012 Results App. You’ll get the latest news, schedules and scores from the event, keeping you up to date with the latest action happening live in London. There’s a calendar schedule, sports details, medal tables and athlete profiles included in London 2012 Results, along with the ability to follow your countries of choice. The app covers all events for the 36 sports of the Olympics and the 21 sports of the Paralympics. If you aren’t able to watch the games or simply want to stay abreast of developments throughout the day, this app is very helpful for fans.

Whether you’re a Big Ten alum or just a fan, the new BTN2Go app is one to check out. Launched by the Big Ten Network (BTN), the official Android app has hit Google Play with an optimized tablet version[3] to boot. You can watch programming from BTN, including live game telecasts and on-demand access to their video archives. There’s also original programming like The Journey and Big Ten Icons, making for a worthwhile mobile experience.

Gaining notoriety after a $100 million investment round from Andreessen Horowitz, GitHub has become a popular resource for software programmers and developers. The online community, known for its ability to let developers share code and track discussions, has gone mobile. Stay up-to-date with integrated news feeds for organizations, friends and repositories. And of course, GitHub is a great place to discover, share and comment on code snippets.

A social network for nomads, CouchSurfing has become quite a popular service in the past year or so. It connects you to a global community of travelers to help you find a couch to crash on during your journey, saving money and time. More than just finding a place to lay your weary head, CouchSurfing has proven a useful network for discovering new friends, sharing meals and events along the way. The new Android app lets you search for people kind enough to offer up a spare bed, and respond to requests you’ve put out. Check profiles before deciding on a couch, and enhance your overall travel experience.

Official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Changelog Has Been Posted

Many of us were expecting the official change log for the new version of Android â€" 4.1. Announced during Google I/O[1], Android Jelly Bean[2] is a game changer, with lots of major improvements in terms of performance and stability, over the previous Android version. There are also the added features, with Google Now[3] on top and major modifications to all the core apps.

Here are some of the changes posted in the official list:

  • Everything in Jelly Bean feels fast, fluid, and smooth. Moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning pages in a book.
  • Jelly Bean features improved performance throughout the system, including faster orientation changes, faster responses when switching between recent apps, and smoother and more consistent rendering across the system through vsync and triple buffering.
  • Jelly Bean has more reactive and uniform touch responses, and makes your device even more responsive by boosting your device’s CPU instantly when you touch the screen, and turns it down when you don’t need it to improve battery life.
  • Google Now brings you just the right information at just the right time. Cards appear throughout the day at the moment you need them, and appear as a notification when they’re important. Learn more[4].
  • Jelly Bean makes it easier to personalize your home screen. As you place widgets on the screen, everything else automatically moves to make room.
  • When you miss a call, a new notification lets you return the call or reply by SMS with a single touch.
  • With Android Beam, you can now easily share your photos and videos.
  • Instantly pair your phone or tablet to Bluetooth® devices like headsets or speakers that support the Simple Secure Pairing standard by just tapping them together.

You can read the full changelog on the Android official page[5].

Nexus 7 shipping started by Google, Early preorders are on their way to new Home

Nexus 7 Preorders Have Begun Shipping

Google has officially announced that they have begun shipping the Nexus 7[1]. Following the unveiling at Google I/O[2], the Google tablet is a very desired device specially for it’s $199 price tag. It’s not just the awesome price that makes it a thing to wish for. It’s also the quad-core hardware that runs Jelly Bean[3], the new version of the Android OS, so well.

During their event, Google surprised the attendance at the conference by giving away, a Nexus 7 tablet to each one (the gift also includes a Galaxy Nexus[4] and Nexus Q[5]). Since then, a lot of test and impressions about the tablet have flooded the internet. Even though some encountered few problems[6] with the device, the general opinion is positive and Google has done a great job, even exceeding expectations.  The early preorders for the Nexus 7 will ship today and tomorrow with the latest tablets arriving on July 20th, according to the Google 2-day shipping policy.

T4T - Twitter for Tablets

T4T - Twitter for Tablets

There are dozens of Twitter apps out there, but none of them really take advantage of a large screen, until now.

T4T uses the extra real estate to display entire timelines of each person you follow. Each timeline is left-right swipeable, is endlessly scrollable, and is displayed based on the person's latest tweet from top to bottom.

Your account's timeline is always in view. Perhaps the greatest benefit of using the extra real estate is having your status updates in a dedicated row at the top of the app's screen. Tapping on any of the familiar functions like Reply, Retweet, Delete Tweet, Send with Mention, is instantly reflected in this row.

Other notable features include: Mention Mode, where the screen switches to show the people who mention you in their tweets; Conversations shows the thread of replies of a tweet; Automatic Updates allows tweets to be updated in the background.

This free version contains third party advertisements.

Fresh Android Apps for July 12: Live Nation, Blottr, Notification History

Fresh Android Apps for July 12: Live Nation, Blottr, Notification History

If you’re a music fan and like to attend shows, check out the new Live Nation Android app and get alerts when there are tickets on offer for your favorite artists. We’ve also got the scoop on Blottr, an app that helps citizen journalists publish stories on breaking news events instantly. Finally, there’s Notification History, an app that gathers the nitty-gritty of all your recents app notifications so you never miss a beat.

It’s great to see Live Nation arrive on Android devices, though it took a long time â€" iOS users have been enjoying it[1] for a while. Aimed at concert goers and fans of live music in general, Live Nation lets you browse, search and discover concerts for your favorite artists near you as well as offering useful information about venues and seating.

However, the app has a few nifty tricks up its sleeve. It offers alerts on exclusive app pre-sales and last-minute tickets for certain shows. There’s also an extensive archive of live set-lists. If you’re dying to see your favorite musician, the Live Nation app could prove to be the best way to ensure you nab those tickets.

If you’re familiar with the term “citizen journalism,” you may want to add Blottr to your Android app arsenal. Blottr lets you capture and report news you witness live and upload it directly to the Blottr website[2] instantly from your mobile Android device.

It should be noted that Blottr is based in London, and currently has more impact in the United Kingdom and throughout the rest of Europe. But perhaps with the help of this app, the company will spread its wings farther and prove Blottr’s value throughout the world.

Did you see or hear about Google’s I/O conference keynote[3] showcasing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean a few weeks ago? One of its new features is an upgraded and deepened version of the Android notification system which offers a whole lot more information.

Many of us will probably still be waiting for Jelly Bean upgrades for a while, so until then, check out Notification History instead. This clever little app runs as a system service and can detect which annoying apps push status-bar ads, collect all the notifications to read later, and even let you backup and share them if you upgrade to the pro version[4].

Swim to evolution with Lightopus

Swim to evolution with Lightopus

Like another favorite before it, Osmos, Lightopus[1] takes you to the lowest common denominator of organisms struggling to survive. While the cells of Osmos maybe on an even lower scale of the evolutionary ladder, the organisms within Lightopus are just as fun. Adding a shade of colorful atmosphere combined with great overall gameplay, Lightopus is like the spiritual successor to Osmos HD[2].

The most noticeable aspect of Lightopus lies in its visual presentation. The aquatic environment is home to a number of bright neon-colored organisms that are incredibly mesmerizing. It’s akin to looking at the city of Tokyo, only through a microscope. The transparent background of the the ocean floor also suggests a much larger and deeper environment.

Visuals aside, Lightopus gameplay is as good as its looks. Taking form of a mature ‘lightopus’ your job is to free trapped younglings of your race called ‘bulbies.’ You take direct control of the adult lightopus by tapping your finger on the screen. Collecting a number of bulbies will increases the swimming speed of the Lightopus which allows you travel the zones much quicker, albeit at a loss of control.

Sharing the deep abyss are other organism looking to feed on your creature. These organisms are much larger and can aggressively pursue players. Fortunately, the collected bulbies also serve as an offensive mechanic against said creatures. Unlike your lightopus, you do not have direct control of these bulbies when attacking. Engaging in combat, though simple, is still a challenge; enemies are vanquished by guiding the trail of bulbies that are following you in the path of enemies.

If you’ve played the PSP gem, flOw, the premise here is quite similar. While that title was devoid of color, Lightopus embraces it to the fulles extent. Simply put, Lightopus is a very immersive experience that everyone should try. The icing on the cake? It’s free.

Fresh Android Apps for July 13: Slice update, NBC Olympics Live Extra, Amazing Alex

Fresh Android Apps for July 13: Slice update, NBC Olympics Live Extra, Amazing Alex

Rounding out the week, Slice â€" Shopping Organized received a big update which extends its capabilities greatly. If you’re a keen online shopper and have plenty of packages to track, Slice is a worthwhile companion app. Up next is NBC Olympics Live Extra â€" still a week or two early, but definitely for fans who want to watch live coverage of London 2012 wherever they are. Finally, Rovio revealed a new game which, amazingly enough, doesn’t contain any angry birds whatsoever. Enjoy the weekend!

We featured Slice a few months back[1] and were impressed by some of its unique features. Yesterday, the app got a great version 2.0 update, so if you’ve never checked out the app before, now might be a good time. Essentially, Slice helps you track your shopping expenses and shipping, and most of it is automated because it taps directly into your email.

This new update offers better tracking of your personal financing, giving you greater insight into your shopping habits. You can track any package by entering its shipping number or scanning a barcode, and the app can now read more than just Google and Yahoo! email accounts, adding AOL, iCloud and Hotmail to the mix.

Alongside the standalone NBC Olympics[2] app, the big U.S. broadcaster just unleashed this new app into Google Play. It could turn out to be a great tool for those who need London 2012 Olympics Games coverage in their hand at all times.

NBC is boasting an incredible 3,500 hours of Olympic coverage starting at the end of the month, and you’ll be able to watch every event live on your Android smartphone with this app. You can even choose your favorite sports, and receive push notifications for event start times. There are full replays, alternate camera views and DVR-like capabilities so you never miss a moment.

Rovio, creators of the hugely popular Angry Birds series, have finally released a new game featuring neither fowl nor pigs (as far as I can tell). Amazing Alex is actually a rebadging of an older title called Casey’s Contraptions which Rovio acquired the rights to a few months ago.

Amazing Alex offers numerous physics-based puzzles where the player must use various bits and bobs lying around to create amazing Rube Goldstein-like objects to complete each level. There are 100 levels spread across four worlds, so it should keep you scratching your head for a while. A $2.99 HD version[3] of Amazing Alex is also available alongside a free version[4].

Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales ban expedited

Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales ban expedited

Galaxy Nexus seems to caught a lot of attention lately because of the things happening with it. Google recently announced Jelly Bean[1] during Google I/O[2] and just a few days ago the update started seeding for the Nexus device. In the meantime, Apple obtained a temporary ban of the device[3] in the US and Samsung did managed to obtain a stay[4] which brings Galaxy Nexus back on sale. It is quite obvious that Apple wants to stop the sales of Google’s flagship smartphone.

US Court of Appeals has granted Samsung’s request to expedite its appeal of the preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Nexus. The company must file its court brief to start the process before July 16 and Apple has until July 30 to respond. It is expected that the Court will reach a decision on August 6. Apple’s response to the temporary stay of the ban will also be considered. About the temporary stay, Apple stated:

[the company's] letter shows nothing beyond the entirely predictable consequence of Samsung’s infringement â€" i.e., the infringing products must be taken off of the market. It is not a legally cognizable harm to halt downstream sales of stolen, pirated, counterfeit, or infringing products.

LG working on quad-core smartphone with a 10MP camera

LG has confirmed they are working on developing a quad-core powered smartphone with a 10MP (or more) camera. This is not LG’s first quad-core device. Their current flagship is the Optimus 4X HD[1]  that recently started shipping in Europe[2]. What makes the new smartphone so special? The new smartphone will be built following the direct specifications from company’s chairman Koo Bon-moo to taken full advantage of technology produced by fellow LG subsidiaries. This means that they will use top quality parts to take advantage of technologies LG is most renowned for.

When will it be available? LG plans on releasing the new smartphone in September. With the current flagship, the Optimus 4X, considered to be less attractive then Samsung’s current top device, the Galaxy SIII, we are all curious how the new smartphone will handle the competition. More to be revealed soon.
